Complex geometries & short lead-times
We provide machined components in BK7, borosilicate glass, fused silica, Calcium Flouride and other types of optical glass to a number of sectors and applications, most commonly for astronomy, metrology, pharmaceutical and diagnostics solutions.
Our ultrasonic 5-axis milling capability and our experienced team can machine down to ∅0.5 mm to create complex features in these optical glasses. We are consistently growing in this field as we provide high quality glass products with significantly shorter lead-time and greater flexibility than our competition.
Machining of Glass Threads
In most cases when something needs to be bolted on to a glass or glass ceramic, part glued threaded inserts is the preferred choice. However in cases when thermal stress or other conditions presents obvious risks of a catastrophic failure other solutions are needed. One of our partner companies had such a requirement and turned to us to have the problem solved. The Microbas team spent some time with trials and worked out a capable process that could be applied at the end of a process chain of grinding, lapping and machining to get the fixing points in the right spots. The result was a structural part with 12 M5 treads machined directly into the glass and it is a good example of our capabilities to provide complex glass machining.
